Coalition Calls on EU Lawmakers to Safeguard Fundamental Rights in New e-Evidence Regulation
Politico Europe Cyber Insights, January 6, 2020

A coalition of trade organizations — including the Microsoft-backed Software Alliance, or BSA — has penned a letter calling on EU lawmakers to ensure fundamental rights are safeguarded in planned evidence sharing rules known as the E-Evidence Regulation. “We … urge the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission to strike the right balance between expanding law enforcement’s ability to gather electronic evidence and protecting fundamental rights in the new e-Evidence legislation,” the groups wrote.
The EU Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs parliamentary committee presented a draft report on the legislation in October, but is yet to adopt a formal position. EU member country governments adopted their negotiating position back in March.
